21 Things Every Adult With Autism Wishes You Knew

In honor of Neurodiversity Celebration Week, I have compiled a list of things. Autistic people want you to know. True acceptance of Autism in society requires a degree of awareness about who autistic people are and what we want from the neurotypical society. The best way to challenge stereotypes and misconceptions about neurological differences is to educate the public on Autism from Autistic people.
Unfortunately, Autistic people still experience a high level of stigma in every area of their life; the workplace, relationships, school, family, and friends. The world is made for neurotypicals, and it is exhausting for us to continually try to fit into a world that wasn’t made for us. The Autistic community is one of the most marginalized and misunderstood; this must change. When I first shared my late diagnosis with family and friends, they were in disbelief and reminded me of their outdated and inaccurate descriptions of Autism. On Quora, I found a community of people who had shared my experience of being misunderstood; and I asked them what the top things they would want non-Autistic people to know are.
